The Basketball Champions League Qualifiers' Round of 16 got underway in Samokov, Bulgaria on Sunday with four single-elimination ties producing everything from a 46-point rout to a one-point classic, as Rio Breogan Lugo, VEF Riga, Dziki Warszawa and Manchester Basketball all advanced to the next stage of the knockout bracket.
The day's most emphatic statement came from Rio Breogan Lugo, who blitzed Rilski Sportist 126-80, building the margin steadily through all four quarters and pulling away for good with a 37-point third period that put the outcome beyond doubt. Dominik Mavra (195-G-1994) orchestrated the rout with 16 points and a game-high 13 assists, Danko Brankovic (217-C-2000) was perfect from the floor for 19 points, and Francis Alonso (191-SG-1996, college: UNCG) and Tevin Brown (195-G-1998, college: Murray St.) each added 19 and 16 respectively as seven different Breogan players finished in double figures. Alan Arnett (196-G-1994, college: GSW, agency: BIG) led Rilski Sportist with 16 points and Isaiah Richards added 14, but the Bulgarian side had no answer for Breogan's offensive efficiency all afternoon. VEF Riga also cruised, beating the Landau Lions 105-88 behind a monster performance from Jordan Sears, who poured in 38 points on 13-of-25 shooting to lead all scorers. Luis Rodriguez (198-G-1999, college: UNLV) added 21 points and nine rebounds for the Latvian side, which controlled the game from the opening tip and never seriously trailed. De'Ondre Jackson (192-G/F-1996, college: PBA, agency: MSG) answered with 21 points and Edward Polite Jr. (196-F-1997, college: Radford, agency: MSG) added 19 for the Lions, but Riga's balance across its rotation proved decisive. Dziki Warszawa advanced with a 116-99 win over BK Opava in a game that stayed competitive for three quarters before the Polish side pulled away with a 36-point fourth. Austin Luke (191-G-1994, college: Belmont) led the way with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, Joseph Girard III (185-G-2000, college: Clemson) added 18 points and seven assists, and Osun Osunniyi was perfect from the field for 16 points off the bench. Jakub Sirina (186-PG-1987, agency: Octagon Europe) countered with 22 points for Opava, with Jan Svandrlik (201-F-1994, college: Iona, agency: Octagon Europe) adding 19, but Warszawa's fourth-quarter surge settled matters. The tightest contest of the day came at the very end, with Manchester Basketball edging Fitness First Wurzburg Baskets 74-73 despite being outscored badly in the fourth quarter. Manchester built its cushion in the second and third periods before holding on as Wurzburg clawed back with a 21-point final frame that fell agonizingly short. Keon Thompson (185-G-2003, college: SF Austin) led Manchester with 14 points, while Chandler Pigge (196-G, college: Harvard) and Jordan Johnson (185-G-1999, college: New Orleans) each added 12. For Wurzburg, Sam Griffin was outstanding with 26 points, but his effort was not enough to complete the comeback. |
